Ultramed has developed MyPreOp® which is the flagship program in the Ultraprep® suite of six integrated products. Ultramed, an award-winning company, provides cloud-hosted health technology for people. This places innovation and first-class patient experience at the forefront of our strategy. There are 10 million procedures such as operations and endoscopies performed in the NHS each year. Pre-procedure assessments are generally paper-based which is time consuming. A Department of Health study predicted £65 million savings a year, if electronic preoperative assessments are used. MyPreOp® is cloud-hosted, allowing patients to enter, own and share their information with their hospital from any device.
This can be as a one-stop preoperative assessment following a surgical outpatient appointment or completed by the patient from home. An electronic report is sent securely to the hospital to integrate into the EPR using HL7 messaging, FHIR and SNOMED-CT coded data. MyPreOp® is powered by complex algorithms which underpin MyPHR® a Personal Health Record being developed by Ultramed. Sophisticated clinical decision support suggests which preoperative tests and actions should be considered by the preoperative assessment nurse. Over 20,000 patients have used MyPreOp® in the NHS. MyPreOp® empowers patients, improves quality and efficiency, and saves nursing time and money.
How did the Innovation Exchange help?
Ultramed was fortunate enough to be on the South West Digital Health Accelerator (DHA). This gave us access to senior members of the AHSN and their networks. Through these we were able to contribute to NICE’s work developing an assessment framework for digital health technologies. Another key benefit of being on the DHA program was working with other similar digital health companies and their teams. This opportunity to share experiences and learn from each other was invaluable.
IMPACTS & OUTCOMES
MyPreOp® is now gaining rapid traction in the NHS with increasing numbers of Trusts using it and a large number of enquires about it from the UK and beyond. A survey for NHS Digital showed that 30% of patients using MyPreOp® avoided a face to face preoperative assessment appointment saving time, money and carbon. Other products in the suite of pre-procedure assessments are now being implemented.
